Expiation

Over a month ago I had to write a short paper on what Expiation is. I was a few days late and did not hand it in.. but still wanted to get it done so I can read up on Expiation.

Here is what I wrote. This is what I understood and what I wrote on or before October 19, 2008. If you want more information or there is something you do not understand look it up in The Bible.

Expiation or Atonement is the covering or erasing of sin by the sacrifice of innocent blood. Before Christ a lamb or ram was sacrificed so the sin can be covered; atonement (Lev 5:18). The only sacrifice that could erase sin is Jesus blood when he sacrificed Himself in Calvary. His blood erased all sin, past, present and future.

The first time expiation is mentioned is in Gen 3:21 when the killing of animals occurred for human use to make tunics. When Adam and Eve sinned they needed the tunics to cover them.

The Day of Atonement is the tenth month (Lev 23:27). On the evening of the nineth day they had to afflict their souls until the evening of the tenth day; Evening to evening (Lev 23:32) to celebrate Sabbath. On the tenth no work was done and an offering made by fire was offered to the LORD to make atonement before the LORD.

In Exodus 12:3-6 expiation is mentioned. On the tenth day every family or small family with their neighbor took a male lamb of the first year without any blemishes and on the 14 day sacrificed it. The people from Israel put the lamb’s blood in the doors as a sign so God will not destroy them. (Exodus 12:13)
(Exodus 12:6, 7) The blood of the Passover lamb on the doorposts and lintel was the Lord’s provision for salvation from physical death, just as the blood of Christ is the Lord’s provision for our salvation from spiritual death.

The effects of expiation is salvation from physical death (Ex 12:6) and expiation with the blood of Christ is our salvation from spiritual death (Ex 12:6) other effects of expiation are peace (Isaiah 38:17), the sins have been taken away (Isaiah 38:17), and being blessed because sins are forgiven (Psalm 32:1). Expiation is also reconciliation and getting closer to God.
